이름 유래
중세부터 α Cep에 붙어 온 이름이에요. 근세 초기부터는 α Cep를 가리킨다고 여겨진 아랍어 표현 al-dhira (al-)yamin, 곧 '오른쪽 아래팔'에서 왔다고 알려졌지만, 이는 잘못된 풀이예요. 첫째, Almagest에서 α Cep는 Cepheus의 오른쪽 '어깨'(아랍어 al-katif 또는 al-mankib)에 있다고 적혀 있고, 이 인물에는 오른쪽 '아래팔'(al-dhira<)이 나오지 않아요. 둘째, 아랍어로 '오른쪽 아래팔'을 바르게 쓰면 al-dhira al-yumna인데, al-yamin과 달리 마지막 음절이 Alderamin과 소리가 맞지 않아요. 그래서 Alderamin은 muqaddam al-dhira<ain, 곧 '두 큐빗, 곧 두 아래팔 가운데 앞선 것'을 중세 기독교 세계에서 여러 가지로 줄여 쓴 말에서 왔을 가능성이 더 커요. 이 말은 아랍어판 Almagest 시대에 이슬람 이전 아라비아 전통을 바탕으로 α Gem을 부르던 이름이었고, 중세에 α Cep로 잘못 옮겨졌을 것으로 보여요. IAU 별 이름 작업반(WGSN)은 2016년 7월 20일 이 이름을 채택했어요.

- Applied to α Cep since medieval times. The erroneous derivation understood since Early Modern times was from al-dhira (al-)yamin, "the Right Forearm," an assumed Arabic descriptive term for α Cep. Firstly, in the Almagest, α Cep is described on the right "shoulder" (Arabic al-katif or al-mankib) of Cepheus, whereas no right "forearm" (al-dhira<) is described for the figure. Secondly, in Arabic, "right forearm" is spelled correctly as al-dhira al-yumna, which (in contrast to al-yamin) lacks assonance in the last syllable to Alderamin. Therefore, it is more likely that Alderamin is derived from the various medieval Christian abbreviations of muqaddam al-dhira<ain, "the Preceding One of the Two Cubits, or Forearms," which was a name for the Arabic Almagest period (based on pre-Islamic Arabian) for α Gem. This would have been wrongly transferred to α Cep in medieval times.
