Nganurganity(σ CMa)는 큰개자리에 있는 별로, 겉보기 밝기는 3.47등급이에요. ESA Hipparcos 위성이 잰 시차 2.91밀리각초로 셈하면 지구에서 약 1,121광년(1000 ÷ 2.91 × 3.26156 ≈ 1,120.8) 떨어져 있고, 분광형은 K4III예요.

이름 유래
Nganurganity 는 오스트레일리아 Victoria 북서부 원주민 Maligundidj 사람들의 한 씨족인 Boorong 의 문화에서 «Jacky lizard»라는 도마뱀이에요. Boorong 사람들은 이 별을 달과 싸우는 조상으로 보았고, 양옆의 별(δ CMa 와 ε CMa)을 그의 두 아내로 여겼어요. 달은 quoll 인 Mityan 인데, Mityan 이 Unurgunite 의 아내 하나에게 반해 꾀어내려 하자 Unurgunite 가 속임수를 알아채고 덤벼 큰 싸움이 벌어졌고 Mityan 이 졌어요. 그 뒤로 달은 하늘을 떠돌고 있고, 싸움의 상처가 지금도 달 얼굴의 바다(maria)로 보인다고 해요. 두 아내 가운데 Unurgunite 에게서 더 멀고 다른 아내(ε CMa)보다 달에 더 가까운 δ CMa 가 Mityan 이 꾀어내려던 아내예요. Stanbridge(1857/61)에는 이 이름이 Unurgunite 로 실렸는데, 그 시절 받아 적기에서는 영어에 없는 첫소리 ng- 를 흔히 빼 버렸기 때문이에요. WGSN 은 이 철자를 바로잡았고, 2017년 9월 5일 이 이름을 채택했어요.

- Nganurganity [ˈŋanuɾˌɡ̊aniɟ̊] is the "Jacky lizard" in the culture of the Boorong, a clan of the indigenous Maligundidj people of northwestern Victoria in Australia, who saw it as an ancestral figure who fights the moon, flanked by two wives, represented by stars on either side of him (δ CMa and ε CMa). The Moon is Mityan, the quoll. Mityan fell in love with one of the wives of Unurgunite and tried to lure her away. Unurgunite discovered Mityan’s trickery and attacked him, leading to a great fight in which Mityan was defeated. The Moon has been wandering the heavens ever since, the scars of the battle still visible on his face as maria. One of the wives (δ CMa) lies further away from Unurgunite and is closer to the Moon than the other wife (ε CMa). This is the wife Mityan tried to lure away. The name was listed as Unurgunite in Stanbridge(1857/61), for initial ng-, which does not occur in English, was typically ignored in transcription of that era. WGSN corrects the spelling.
